All road vehicles in Alaska are required to be registered unless they are specifically exempted by law. Registration is proof that your vehicle is known to the State of Alaska DMV and has paid all applicable taxes and fees due to operate in Alaska.
The State of Alaska issues registration for commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles, trucks, buses, vans, ATV's, motorcycles, boats, snow machines and trailers.
How do I register my vehicle in Alaska for the first time?
Please submit the following documents to our office in person or along with a notarized POA. The vehicles current or most recent registration; the last issued Title or MCO. Complete FORM 812. Bring your ID.
How do I renew the vehicle registration?
As the vehicle owner, registration renewal is easy. Simply come in w/ ID and pay the fees. If you don't own the vehicle you'll need to show your ID and know pertinent vehicle info, complete form 812 & pay the fees.
How do I replace the vehicle registration?
If you own the vehicle provide the plate number and/or vin # and bring ID. Not the owner? Do all the above and complete form 812.
Registration starts over once it has been expired for a year; or, if the vehicle has been reconstructed or abandoned. Also when the previous owner had an exemption; and/or if it was purchased at an impound sale. Registration also starts over for vehicles going from a non-commercial use to commercial use.
Non-Commercial Vehicles: are registered for a 2 year period. Minimum 13 months registration required.
Commercial Vehicles: have the option of a 1 year or 2 year registration option. NOTE: Leased vehicles are commercial.
TAXES:
The State of Alaska collects a Motor Vehicle Registration Tax (MVRT) for those municipalities and boroughs that have elected to have this form of personal property tax. The tax rate is based on the model year and the city where the vehicle is registered.
